Use a level to draw a vertical line through the shoulder height line. Remove the door from hinges using the flat-head screwdriver and hammer. Place the door on a raised level surface, such as a pair of saw horses. Match the marked lines on the door with the shoulder and center lines on the template. Make sure the template is at least three inches from the bottom and sides of the door.
Use a level to ensure it is straight. Hold the drill steady and straight. Place the jigsaw blade into a corner hole, making sure the blade goes entirely through the door, and cut along the template lines.
Continue until an opening is made. Insert the interior frame into the opening to check the fit. Make small adjustments to the opening if the frame does not fit easily.
With the door back on the hinges, align the interior and exterior frames. Press firmly to connect the alignment tabs. Place mounting screws into openings on the interior frame. Tighten with a Philips screwdriver. Important: Check for electrical and plumbing fixtures in the wall. Use the stud finder to locate the studs in the wall where the pet door will go. Make a small mark where the studs are. With your pet standing between the stud marks, draw a five inch horizontal line at his shoulder height.
Align the lines on the template with the lines on the wall and tape in place. Note: The lines on the wall may need to be extended, depending on the size of the pet door. Place the jigsaw blade into a corner hole and cut along the drawn template lines. Continue cutting along the template until an opening is created.
Insert the exterior frame into the opening to check the fit. Cut a 2x4 or 2x6 piece of wood to the gap measurements. Remove any debris from the wall where the support will go. Place the piece of wood in the wall gap. Make sure it is flush with the bottom cut out of the wall. Drill two holes at the bottom of the cut out and use two drywall screws to fasten the wood on the interior wall.

Secure the exterior frame with four Phillips head wood screws, one in each corner. Use the additional four screws to make sure that the door is flush against the wall.
